Position: MECC Tutor

Formed in 1988, Matawa First Nations Management (Matawa) is a Tribal Council providing services to nine member communities in Northern Ontario. The organization is dedicated to providing its members with advisory and support services in the areas of communications, economic development, education, finance and business, health, membership and technical services.

The Matawa Education Department supports quality, accessible, community-based educational services for seven Matawa First Nation communities: Aroland, Eabametoong, Nibinamik, Long Lake #58, Ginoogaming, Neskantaga, and Webequie First Nations. In addition to providing advisory services to Education Authorities and Matawa First Nation leadership, the Education Department administers post-secondary support services for 5 Matawa First Nations; operates the Matawa Education and Centre (MECC), a private secondary school located in Thunder Bay; and coordinates the Student Nutrition Program for 6 communities.

The MECC located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, provides a unique learning environment to support students as they move toward the successful completion of their secondary education and continue on their pathways to work, training or post-secondary education programs.

Matawa is inviting applications for the position of MECC Tutor with the Matawa Education Department.

Position Summary:
The MECC Tutor supports Matawa students in completing academic tasks and assignments during after-hours and weekends. The MECC Tutor provides additional instruction and student support in a variety of subject areas, and assists the MECC teaching staff with the on-going assessment and evaluation of students. The MECC Tutor is a member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers with qualifications in English, Mathematics, and/or Science at the Intermediate/Senior level, and has expertise or experience in alternative education, Aboriginal education and/or Cooperative Education. As a member of the MECC team, the Tutor supports students as they move toward the successful completion of their secondary education and continue on their pathways to work, training or post-secondary education programs.

The position is based in Thunder Bay, with some travel that may be required to Matawa First Nation communities. The successful applicants will be required to submit a current Criminal Record Check, including vulnerable sector, and current “negative” result TB skin test. This is a contract position to June 26, 2021, with possibility of extension, pendingfunding and a successful performance review.

Preferred Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Current Certificate of Qualification and Registration with the Ontario College of Teachers
  • A minimum of 3 years successful teaching experience
  • Experience as a secondary school teacher in English, Mathematics, and/or Science
  • Experience teaching in a First Nation school and/or teaching First Nation students
  • An ability to explain difficult concepts in a way that students will understand
  • Knowledge and experience in developing courses and curriculum, and in utilizing ILC course materials and experience with computer systems (Apple preferred)
  • Knowledge of First Nation, education, culture and life styles

In addition, the ideal candidate will have excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, leadership, time management, stress management, and critical thinking skills. Fluency in Ojibway, Oji-Cree or Cree is considered an asset.
