Visual Arts and Technology Department Head

Full-Time - Permanent

80% Teaching and 20% Department Head

The arts are alive at BSS! Through visual arts at BSS, students develop creativity, critical thinking skills and resilience. At every age, they have opportunities to use a variety of media to create personal, meaningful pieces of art. It’s a process that instills a sense of discovery and self-realization. Our hallways are filled with student pieces that provoke, challenge and astound.

Our teachers provide a rigorous curricular experience that embraces inquiry-based instructional strategies that align with our Signature of a BSS Girl attributes and our Culture of Powerful Learning best teaching practices. We are seeking highly collaborative teachers who are passionate about their subject area and who actively seek the opportunity for interdisciplinary and real-world connections.

The Visual Arts and Technology Department Head will work to further develop the School’s culture of making (creation/production) and display that makes learning visible and includes; process work, resolved work and high quality visual and written documentation and formal exhibitions. The further development of the culture of making will be supported through student access to labs and studio spaces both during and outside of class time. The Department Head will also extend opportunities for students to learn from and with experts by building a program that includes access to a range of artists and industry experts. The department head will build relationships with other departments and divisions to grow opportunities for interdisciplinary learning, including with the Performing Arts Department.

Key Responsibilities:

Department Head

  • Lead department members (Grades 7-12) in identifying departmental philosophy and goals, and instructional strategies consistent with the School’s Vision and Mission and the Strategic Plan
  • Oversees the review, development and implementation of Ministry aligned curriculum and assessment appropriate for each phase of learning and and course
  • Observe department members’ classes and provide constructive feedback and coaching for effective instruction and assessment
  • Assigns responsibilities to department members to ensure management of the department’s physical and financial resources
  • Prepares and presents the vision and benefits of Visual Arts at BSS with our community
  • Involved in the hiring, onboarding, and performance process for employees in their department

Teaching

  • Prepare lesson plans, outlines and assessments using inquiry and problem-based learning that engages students, challenges them, and meets the subject-specific outcomes and expectations
  • Ability to differentiate lesson plans based on the needs of your students
  • Participate in co-curricular activities including coaching, clubs, trips and participating in the school community as a whole
  • Engage in interdisciplinary initiatives particularly
  • Make contributions that productively support the overall well-being and growth of students in the Senior School
  • Integrate technology in the classroom in ways that enhance the student learning experience and deepen knowledge and conceptual understanding
  • Communicate effectively with parents about all aspects of the overall program and the individual learning of each student
  • Integrate diversity, equity, inclusiveness and belonging into the classroom learning environment
  • Authentically embeds diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into all processes

Skills, Experience and Attributes:

  • Must have an Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certificate
  • Intermediate/Senior teaching qualifications
  • Ideally a subject specialist and relevant degrees
  • Strong proficiency in Google Suite; knowledge of Brightspace an asset
  • Commitment to, and passion for, furthering the work of the school and girls’ education
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the proven ability to develop relationships and a caring rapport with students and their families, and with teachers
  • Commitment and desire to create inclusive and diverse spaces of belonging
  • Proven strengths in problem-solving and adapting to change
