Community Support Worker
1 – Permanent Position

CUPE Local 4400, Unit C – Grade M
$35.44 per hour

Reporting to the Central Coordinating Principal or designate, Inner City, the Community Support Worker will work with schools, parents and community resources in specified communities to develop school community activities and projects, which address the needs of students, families and schools, in those communities. These activities and projects will support school and system initiatives relating to community outreach and parent engagement, equity, inclusive schools, literacy, numeracy, tutoring/mentoring, interventions for students at risk and school community safety.
Summary of Duties:
Ø Establish a network of local agencies, residents and parents, and school representatives to provide advice, support and resources to the schools in the neighbourhood;
Ø Work with the schools and local agencies to establish community-based programs, which support literacy and numeracy and students at-risk in the elementary and middle schools (community reading programs, homework clubs, tutoring, computer literacy etc.);
Ø Work with the schools and the agencies to organize parent support programs in the neighbourhood designed to provide parents with the knowledge and skills they need for effective parenting and school engagement;
Ø Work with secondary and middle schools to organize activities for youth, which will positively affect their educational aspirations;
Ø Work with a neighbourhood school community committee to develop proactive and preventative community based initiatives which promote safety within the schools and the community;
Ø Support community forums and networks for information and input on educational issues and needs; and
Ø Other related community-based duties as assigned by the Lead Principal.
Qualifications:
Ø Two-year community college diploma in social sciences (e.g., Social Service Worker) with three years community development experience working in a community-based environment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
Ø Strong group facilitation, consensus building, and problem solving skills;
Ø Sound understanding of the structure and operation of the school system;
Ø Knowledge of related TDSB policies and procedures;
Ø Ability to work effectively with staff at all levels of the system and with trustees;
Ø Ability to work effectively with socio-economically and diverse communities;
Ø Strong interpersonal, teamwork, organizational and communication skills including presentation skills;
Ø Research and report writing skills; and
Ø Proficient keyboarding skills and expertise in the use computer technology (e.g., e-mail, internet, presentation packages and word processing).
Special Requirements:
Ø Provision of own vehicle for Board Business.
Ø Occasional travel across the TDSB sites.
Ø Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends in order to meet client needs.
Hours: 35 hours per week.

Location: Various Learning Centre 3 Schools across the Board
