Position Title: Writer, Communications

Status: Temporary Part-Time (6-month Contract)

Hours per week: 24 hours

Program/Department: UofGH Communications & Public Affairs

Campus/Location: The University of Guelph-Humber (207 Humber College Blvd, Toronto) located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit.

Salary: Band 6 ($24.24 - $29.38)

The Writer's Role: 

The Writer, is a member of the Communications and Public Affairs team and is responsible for journalistic-quality communications that positively enhance the image and reputation of the University of Guelph-Humber (UofGH). Reporting to the Manager, Communications and Public Relations, and working closely with the entire Communications and Public Affairs team, the Writer is responsible for the development, completion and securing approval of web, digital, and print communications for external and internal audiences. The Writer provides day-to-day expertise to the Manager and to the overall Communications and Public Affairs department.

The Writer will demonstrate experience and strong knowledge of: 

  • Communication best practices and standards
  • Developing and curating written content
  • Multiplatform storytelling and integrated content
  • Journalistic-quality feature/news writing
  • Writing for post-secondary education
  • Writing and editing for the web, multimedia, digital and print-based materials
  • Best practices for subject interviews
  • English language, grammar and CP style
  • Editing and proofreading copy from various stakeholders
  • Managing several projects simultaneously while meeting established milestones and deadlines
  • Event support and reporting
  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  • The Writer also supports the other roles within the Communications and Public Affairs team and performs other duties as assigned.
 

Qualifications
 

Education:

  • The successful candidate will have a 3 (three) year diploma/degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or another relevant discipline.

Experience and Skills:

  • A minimum of 3 (three) years' experience working as a journalist
  • Experience writing feature and news stories for print and web
  • A self-starting storyteller with journalistic-quality interviewing and writing skills
  • The ability to multi-task and complete projects under tight timelines with little supervision
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills and relationship-building abilities
  • The ability to create and integrate various types of content into published stories and articles
  • The ability to proofread and edit print and web-based content
