The Opportunity:

We are seeking a Theatre Technician for our new Innovation Centre and Studio Theatre (iCAST) to join us on a full-time basis to support the development and use plan for the building. This role will report into the Instructional Leader, Integrated Arts, and provide audio visual support for events and school programming. The Theatre Technician will operate a wide range of theatrical equipment in a modern theatre which includes operation of lighting, sound and staging related duties. As a skilled Theatre Technician, this role will also assist in training teachers and students in the use of the theatre equipment.

This position follows the academic calendar year (September - June).

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:  

  • Collaborate with various faculty members to support planning and execution of school events and Theatre performances.

  • Will support events set up, space and resources bookings, and training with faculty and students for the iCAST building.

  • Provide assistance with related equipment and research new materials to support the growth of curricular and co-curricular programs.

  • Oversee equipment and material rentals and maintain inventories or materials, including any repair or replacement needs.

  • Build and maintain costume, props, and small set pieces as well as work with outside artists to build costumes, props, sets for shows.

  • Ensure the safe technical operations of the theatre venues.

  • Troubleshoot theatre equipment and computer problems.

  • Assist in developing guidance for use documents for iCAST and other Arts facilities.

  • Assist in transporting needed equipment to outside theatres.



Qualifications and Experience:

  • Post-secondary training or equivalent in lighting, stage management, sound engineering, or other related field;

  • Coursework or training in professional theatre operations, performing arts, or a related field is considered an asset;

  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ related experience;

  • Knowledge of operational and technical techniques used in theatre production lighting, sound, and rigging equipment;

  • Understanding and expertise of various computer software and hardware systems related to theatre production;

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage productions (this does not extend to maintenance and repair where a licensed electrician is required.);

  • Experience in working with sound engineering, video mapping, and digital lighting desks is an asset; 

  • Experience with theatre stage rigging involving scenic design and construction is an asset.

Target Hiring Salary: $61,984 - $77,480 (salary is prorated based on the 10-month status of the role)
