Permanent Full-Time, Live-In Position

Commencing end of August 2022

Summary of Position:

The Boarding Advisor is a live-in position responsible for the care and supervision of all boarders. Reporting to the Dean of Boarding, this position will assist the Boarding Co-ordinators in providing a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for Boarding students in Grades 8-12. Our Boarding staff are experts in understanding current needs of adolescents to help them grow as individuals and are deeply committed to creating a warm, encouraging atmosphere. In addition, they are passionate about supporting boarders in building the confidence and resilience to know themselves well, and to navigate the transition to successfully learning and living in a new environment. In conjunction with other Boarding staff, the position is responsible for leading a small family group of boarders, communicating regularly with parents/guardians and ensuring that the aims and objectives of the Boarding curriculum are met.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Monitors students’ academic, social, physical and emotional progress and acts as a mentor by interacting with students in a variety of formal and informal ways
  • Assists the Boarding Co-ordinators in ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all boarders. This includes carrying out shifts in the Boarding Office, updating daily logs and reports, executing various safety, social, and attendance rounds as assigned, supervising meals, assisting with the evening study program, administering basic first aid and escorting students to medical clinics and the hospital
  • Determines safety of student leaves according to Boarding leave protocols and ensures that details are investigated and parent/host permissions are received
  • Expertly advises, supports, mentors and empowers boarders assigned to their family and advisor group, building meaningful relationships with their parents, teachers, and counselors
  • Plans and supervises a relevant Boarding Program, including activities that promote inclusion, belonging, community involvement and student well-being
  • Works to engender a feeling of respect and trust between boarders and staff
  • Adheres to the policies and procedures of the School and the Boarding Program (as outlined in the Boarding Handbook)
  • Intervenes in situations where the safety and well-being of a student is compromised
  • Participates in professional learning on an ongoing basis and contributes to the department’s body of knowledge
  • Creates an inclusive environment for all students and staff and provides a program that recognizes and celebrates each student’s identities
  • Remains flexible and undertakes any other responsibilities, in a variety of circumstances, as may reasonably be required by the Dean of Boarding or the Boarding Co-ordinators
  • Embeds diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values into all activities
  • Commits to the Staff/Faculty Growth and Evaluation Process
  • Other responsibilities as required

Skills, Experience and Attributes:

  • Relevant experience working with adolescents including living/working in a residential or camping environment
  • University degree/college diploma in a related area of discipline i.e. Child and Youth Studies, Education or Social Work
  • Understanding of the developmental stages of adolescent including their health and wellness needs
  • Current Standard First Aid, CPR, Red Cross/LSS and NLS certifications are an asset
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, judgment and decision making ability
  • Demonstrated positive, enthusiastic approach to learning and engagement
  • Proven leadership skills and ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making ability
  • Positive, creative, collaborative and organized
