Nursery Program Assistant at the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Lab School

Contract: September 2022 to June 2023

Established in 1925, the Dr. Eric Jackman Institute of Child Study Laboratory School at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto is the oldest Laboratory School in Canada. The Laboratory School serves children from Nursery to Grade 6. It has a threefold mandate: exemplary education for the 200 children who attend the school; graduate teacher education, and research. The School makes a noted contribution to the understanding of strong educational practices in elementary schools in Canada and around the world. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is interested in gaining experience working with young children in an educational setting. The Nursery Team is looking for an individual to assist the Nursery teachers in the care of the children and the day to day running of the Nursery program.

Key Responsibilities include: 

  • Assists in the implementation of indoor and outdoor daily activities; assists with the ongoing supervision of classroom, playground, group and routine activities. The children and educators spend half the morning outside in all weather.
  • Collaborates as a member of the Nursery teaching team in ensuring the overall health and safety of all children by maintaining a sanitary and safe environment.
  • Provides assistance with arranging children’s play space to reflect the philosophy of the school and curriculum of the Nursery Program.
  • Assists with the daily preparation of the playground and classroom; cleans/organizes equipment and other areas of the classroom as needed.
  • Builds and maintains responsive relationships with children.
  • Shares observations of the children with the Nursery teacher to help with overall assessment.
  • Builds and maintains positive and professional relationships with parents; shares any relevant information communicated by parents with the Nursery Teacher.
  • Participates in program development meetings once a month.
  • Provides care-giving routines such as toileting, serving snacks, dressing children to go outside, etc.
  • Support for an ongoing research study with George Brown College School of Early Childhood on environmental inquiry and outdoor education in the early years
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

We seek applicants with the following professional qualifications and experience: 

  • Work experience in childcare/with young children 
  • Early Childhood Assistant (ECA) qualifications an asset 
  • First Aid Certification (can be obtained after hiring)
