Overall Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Health, Wellness and Abilities, the Wellness Advisor will provide support for the implementation and maintenance of the Board’s attendance support program that promotes and supports employee well-being and regular attendance at work.

 

Summary of Duties

  • Act as the primary point of contact for Managers, Supervisors, Principals, Superintendents, unions, associations and employees regarding attendance support and wellness initiatives and resources.
  • Provide support for the implementation and administration of the Board’s attendance support program.
  • Support a culture of wellness that promotes regular attendance at work by contributing to the development of innovative strategies to address absenteeism and collaborate with leadership to implement actions that improve attendance and well-being.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of attendance policies and procedures.
  • Collect, analyze and monitor attendance metrics and identify patterns that contribute to the absenteeism, recommending action plans for attendance improvement, and assist with implementation to enhance workplace productivity.
  • Coach Managers, Supervisors, Principals, and Superintendents on effective attendance support techniques including facilitating attendance meetings, providing insight to identify root causes of attendance issues and promote best practices to achieve attendance goals.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that stakeholders are aware of wellness initiatives, resources and support services.
  • Coach and provide support and guidance to employees experiencing attendance challenges.
  • Escalate complex cases to the Senior Manager and refer employee accommodation requests to the Disability Case Administrator, as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance-related data and statistics.
  • Participate in developing and delivering training programs to promote the Board’s attendance support program and best practices.
  • Provide support for grievances and/or arbitrations related to the attendance support program.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and legal requirements related to attendance support and employee wellness.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for continuous improvement and make recommendations for enhancements to the attendance program.
  • Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusiveness in the development and implementation of programs and services.
  • Provide interpretation, advice, guidance, and assistance to employees regarding the Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP)
  • Create a culture that values both work and the overall well-being through open conversations, encouragement, and resource sharing; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • University degree in Human Resources Management, Disability Management, Psychology or a related discipline with three years of progressively responsible related experience in a large, unionized organization, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated training and experience in attendance and absenteeism management, wellness programs and/or disability management with an understanding of return to work and accommodations.
  • Sound working knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Employment Standards Act, 2000 (ESA), Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
  • Discretion, objectivity, sound judgment and the ability to deal with highly confidential information and emotional situations.
  • Proficient in data analysis and report generation.
  • Strong analytical, research, investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, presentation skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated facilitation and coaching skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple priorities.
  • Computer skills including spreadsheets, databases, word-processing, attendance support software, human resources/payroll information system and presentation packages.
  • Proven ability in promoting equitable practices which value inclusiveness and diversity.

 

Special Requirements

 

  • May require occasional travel to TDSB sites.

 

Additional Information

Assets:

  • Experience with a holistic approach to disability management and experience in vocational rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of related Board policies, procedures, protocols and collective agreement provisions.
  • Prior school board experience; and
  • Mediation experience
