Child and Youth Counsellor
1 – Term Position

Native Learning Centre – East (LC3)

This position will begin as soon as possible, and end no later than July 6, 2022.

Category D:  $59,041 to $86,189 per annum
(OSSTF-PSSP+, Unit A)
Work Year:  194 + 3 Days

Child and Youth Counsellors work to promote the social and emotional growth of at-risk or marginalized students to maximize educational opportunities.

Working as a member of an interdisciplinary team comprised of the Manager of Child and Youth Services, Principal, Teacher(s), Social Workers, Attendance Counsellors, Manager of Social Work, Caring and Safe Schools, Guidance, Student Success, Community Support Workers and others.

The Child and Youth Counsellor will provide assistance in the acquisition, reinforcement and maintenance of academic, communication, social and personal management skills.

This position is available because of funding for the 2021/2022 School Year. At the conclusion of this assignment, the successful candidate with permanent status will return to his/her previous position.  A Temporary Employee will not achieve permanent status through this posting, subject to the provisions of Article C.1.7.

On professional matters, Child and Youth Counsellors report to the Manager of Child and Youth Services.
On operational matters, Child and Youth Counsellors report to the Principal.

Summary of Duties

  • Provide a continuum of counseling services for at-risk students in conjunction with team members;
  • Work collaboratively with the school support team to develop pro-active strategies and programs aimed at enhancing student success, including acting as in-school resource for Safe Schools initiatives;
  • Provide group or individual short-term goal-oriented intervention/conflict resolution counselling;
  • Provide assistance to students in the acquisition, reinforcement and maintenance of academic, communications, social and personal management skills, including student attendance;
  • Provide support and information to students and families regarding non-clinical community resources such as legal, day care, welfare, housing and transportation;
  • Provide workshops and in-service opportunities for parents, staff and students;
  • Meet the standards and expectations of the professional child and youth care practice service including preparation of reports and maintaining appropriate records;
  • Attend meetings and in-service seminars/professional development activities as required;
  • Assist in the supervision of students during various activities as required; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Child and Youth Care or Social Work with one to two years’ experience working with hard-to-serve children/adolescents in a school setting;
  • Experience in working with children/adolescents from equity-seeking communities;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide group or individual short- term goal-oriented intervention/conflict resolution counselling;
  • Ability to maintain a co-operative working relationship in an environment where teamwork is essential;
  • Ability to provide an effective level of service;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of community resources that assist at-risk youth;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of legislation and policies relating to at-risk youth; and
  • Basic computer skills.

Special Provisions:

  • As a position requirement, the successful candidate will self-identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and will have a strong understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing and being; working within First Nations, Métis, Inuit communities;
  • Knowledge of current education issues and barriers as well as an awareness of available supports is required to effectively support and advocate for First Nations, Métis, Inuit students and families;
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of the Ontario First Nations, Métis, Inuit Education Policy Framework and current issues and research pertaining to First Nations, Métis, Inuit education;
  • Demonstrated competence in the development of materials to support teachers and schools working with First Nations, Métis, Inuit populations.

  • Membership in the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care.

Hours of Work:
Full-time: 7.0 hours per day, scheduled according to operational needs
