As part of the teacher training programs in Saskatchewan, teacher candidates are required to partake in a school-based teaching practicum. This exciting and challenging experience provides invaluable opportunities to learn new skills and test theory under the guidance of a mentor teacher.
Once you’ve completed your education, it is time to apply for certification.
To teach in Saskatchewan, teachers must hold a Saskatchewan teacher’s certificate. Teacher certification is the responsibility of the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board (SPTRB) and the application can be completed online through their website.

Professional ‘A’ Teacher’s Certificate
Valid for teaching all subjects in grades Prekindergarten to Grade 12.
Requires a 4-year post-secondary education and degree
Most teachers hold a permanent Professional ‘A’ Teacher’s Certificate.
Professional ‘B’ Teacher’s Certificate
Valid for teaching a specified subject (and related subjects) to students in all grades in Saskatchewan schools.
Requires a degree in an approved area of specialization plus 48 semester hours of professional education
Vocational Certificate
Valid for teaching a specified subject (and related subjects) to students in all grades in Saskatchewan schools.
Requires a Senior matriculation (Grade 12), journeyperson's certificate or approved training in a trade, plus one year of teacher education (including a practicum)
Technical Certificate
Valid for teaching a specified subject (and related subjects) to students in all grades in Saskatchewan schools.
Requires Senior matriculation (Grade 12), two years of study in a defined technology at the post-secondary level, two years of work experience, plus one year of teacher education (including a practicum)
Provisional Teacher’s Certificate
Issued to an eligible teacher who moves to Saskatchewan from a jurisdiction where they are certified.
The teacher is issued a Provisional Certificate until they have taught successfully for one year; is recommended for permanent certification by the Director of Education; and has removed any other condition from the teacher’s certificate.
Temporary Teaching Permit (TTP)
Valid to teach a specific subject(s), grade(s), or to substitute teach with a specific employer that is unable to fill that specific assignment with a certified and registered teacher. TTPs are issued to individuals who do not qualify for any other permanent or provisional teacher's certificate. A TTP is valid for only the school year in which it was issued and only for that specific employer.
The basic educational requirements for a TTP include:
High school graduation
Some post-secondary education or a specialized skill (i.e. mastery of a specific language)
