Specialized Programming

Outdoor Education

The DDSB offers outdoor and environmental education programs that connect students with nature and foster sustainability. Programs include visits to one of four local outdoor education centers, where students participate in activities such as hiking, team-building, and exploring ecosystems. These initiatives aim to develop environmental awareness and critical thinking skills.

DDSB also organizes summer camps and nature-based learning experiences, emphasizing eco-friendly practices and real-world engagement. These programs align with DDSB’s commitment to innovative and inclusive education.

eLearning

Grade 11 and 12 students, adult learners, and summer school students are offered flexible and dynamic eLearning opportunities. This provides unique experiences for educators and offers learners an alternative to traditional classroom settings, allowing them to access educational content at their own pace.

First Nation Métis and Inuit Education

The Indigenous Education Department at DDSB is dedicated to implementing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action by raising awareness of Indigenous history, perspectives, and contributions through a holistic and integrated approach. The department aims to strengthen students' sense of identity, promote positive self-image, and foster ongoing dialogue with community members and organizations.

Language Learning Programs

In order to serve its diverse community, the DDSB offers language learning programs for both English and international languages. Elementary-aged students can learn international languages such as Tamil or Mandarin. Durham Continuing Education (DCE) offers English as a second language classes during the day or outside of regular school hours.

Adult and Continuing Education Programs

Durham Continuing Education also offers diverse programs within the DDSB, providing teachers the chance to support adult and youth learners. These include courses in career pathways, literacy, and college/university preparation, with options for day, night, and distance education.
