Supervises renovation and maintenance projects for the Durham District School Board. Directs daily activities related to renovation and maintenance, guiding projects from design through preconstruction to completion. Ensures all projects are delivered on time, aligned with the organization's strategic goals, and compliant with regulatory standards and Ministry directives, while maintaining a safe and functional learning environment for staff and students.
Key Responsibilities Supervise and Lead the Team Lead external contractors, consultants, engineers, and architects. Provide technical guidance and problem-solving support for renovations, conversions, maintenance, and major projects. Direct project activities in compliance with regulatory, legislative standards, and Ministry directives. Ensure project execution aligns with budget, timelines, and requirements.
Project Management Monitor project progress and develop reports to ensure successful plan execution. Provide ongoing project progress updates to internal and external stakeholders. Identify current and potential project issues and lead solution development. Review and negotiate change requests, contracts, and related documents (change orders, progress drawings, job site instructions, contractor payments). Submit change requests and contracts for Manager approval. Ensure project documentation, including drawings, maintenance requirements, and operation manuals, are up-to-date.
Manage and Coordinate on Site Issues During Construction Manage projects to ensure ongoing school operations during construction (e.g., vehicle drop-offs, parking, classrooms, fire alarms etc.). Conduct weekly/daily site inspections throughout the project (pre-construction to post-occupancy) to assess site conditions, progress, and identify future issues. Ensure construction complies with the agreed design, maintaining quality control and standards. Review and address construction-related concerns raised by third-party testing and impaction companies, updating project requirements as needed.
Internal and External Support Provide pre- and post-construction support. Collaborate with DDSB departments to coordinate occupancy of renovated spaces. Provide up-to-date information and documents related to renewal and maintenance projects when needed. Address concerns, complaints, and incidents raised by internal staff and external stakeholders (neighbors, public), including attending lawsuits/dispositions. Ensure timely reviews with local, municipal, regional authorities, and fire department/townships. Resolve minor accommodation needs for successful program delivery.
Health and Safety Develop a safety plan for staff and students during renovations, adjusting as site conditions change. Identify health and safety requirements related to renovations. Ensure documentation is up-to-date and compliant with DDSB toolkit and relevant regulations. Inspect proposed renovation areas for Designated Substances and arrange for proper removal by licensed contractors. Respond to complaints and concerns from staff and the public related to renovation activities.
Participate in Facility Audits and Reporting Prepare background information and accompany Facility Auditors on annual school inspections. Ensure major renovation work is reported and accurately reflected in the Ministry database for school facility conditions.
Qualifications and Skills Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, and legislation as it relates to facilities Knowledge of construction and best practices, pertaining to all aspects of facilities planning (mechanical, electrical, IT, life systems and health and safety planning), ideally within the context of school design requirements Project management skills to coordinate resources at different stages of planning or execution Ability to use various MS Office applications and software packages related to Facilities planning software and databases (AutoCAD, VFA) Ability to review comprehensive construction documents containing legal, technical terminology Ability to develop and review drawings and specifications
Education Competition of a college diploma in a related discipline such as Architecture, Engineering or Construction, or combination of education, training and experience deemed to be equivalent.
Experience 5 years project management experience. 5 years experience with construction methods and practices. 3 years experience with Ministry/Board policies, procedures and standards. 3 years AutoCAD/software programs knowledge. 3 years experience with facilities audits (VFA experience is an asset).
Additional Information - This is a 35 hour per week, permanent position.
