Technology Department Head

20% Department Head, 80% Teaching

The Technology Department Head will work to further develop the School’s culture of making and displaying that makes Technology learning visible and includes; process work, finished work and high quality visual and written documentation. The further development of the culture of making will be supported through student access to labs both during and outside of class time. The Department Head will also extend opportunities for students to learn from and with experts by building a program that includes access to a range of industry experts. 

What You’ll Do:

Departmental Specific

  • Lead and implement a strategic vision for technology, design technology and computer science learning that enriches the Ontario curriculum.
  • Advises on Junior School technology learning aligned with the Ontario Curriculum and the Grades 7 to 12 program. Keeps both divisions aware of opportunities for enrichment.
  • Further develops the whole school’s culture of making and displaying that makes technology learning visible and includes; process work, finished work and high quality visual and written documentation, student access to labs both during and outside of class time.
  • Collaborates and consults with teachers in the development and implementation of transformative learning, through and with technology, that aligns with our Culture of Powerful Learning approaches to learning, including multidisciplinary, project-based, as well as design thinking where applicable.
  • Continually expands the department members’ understanding and application of evidence informed technology pedagogies.
  • Oversees Design/Idea Lab Technicians to ensure safety of the MakerSpace/Design spaces.
  • Shares with and engages parents/guardians in the exciting technology initiatives being run at the school.
  • Oversees the development and expansion of technology co-curricular activities such as hackathons, summer programs and the Robotics and Rocketry programs.
  • Collaborates with Research and Learning Common Specialist on generative artificial intelligence and other emergent technologies to ensure faculty use in their classes.

General

  • Preferably 3 TAS20 courses, 1 TDJ3M/4M course or 1 ICS4U/3U course
  • Leads department members (Grades 7-12) in identifying departmental philosophy and goals, and instructional strategies consistent with the School’s Vision and Mission and the Strategic Plan. 
  • Oversees the review, development and implementation of Ministry aligned curriculum and assessment appropriate for each phase of learning and course.
  • Observes department members’ classes and provides constructive feedback and coaching for effective instruction and assessment. 
  • Supports the development and sharing of coherent and transparent lesson, unit and long range plans, feeding into Scope and Sequence for each course in the department.
  • Contributes to aspects of the scheduling and timetabling for the Middle and Senior School.
  • Authentically embeds diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging into all processes.
  • Commits to the Faculty Growth and Evaluation Process, participates in professional learning and growth.

Technician Team Development and Promotion

  • Provides guidance, support and leadership to the School’s design technology technicians, including the Staff Growth process and professional learning
  • Works with Junior School faculty and leadership, Science Department Head and M&SS faculty to ensure that STEM learning is visible and includes; process work, finished work and high quality visual and written documentation, student access to labs both during and outside of class time

  • Proven communication, presentation and facilitation skills both spoken and written  
  • Have a vision for the integration and use of technology to enhance the curriculum

  • Culturally competent with a positive attitude toward cultural uniqueness and a readiness to accept and respect others
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • Proficiency in Brightspace, Google Suite and Microsoft Office

Annual compensation is based on our Faculty Grid, which factors in qualifications and up to 12 years of teaching experience:

  • Entry to 6 Years: $69,000 – $98,000
  • Over 6 Years: $99,000 – $134,000
  • Future Growth: Rates are set to increase for the 2026–2027 academic year.
