Matawa First Nations: Working Together to Make a Change

The Matawa Education Department is dedicated to supporting the schools and Education Authorities of nine Matawa First Nations communities in Northwestern Ontario. Through advisory services and educational programs, the department aims to enhance learning opportunities, promote culturally relevant education, and empower students with the skills they need for success.

Location

The nine communities comprising the Matawa First Nations are located in Northern Ontario, north of Lake Superior. This region is home to breathtaking natural landscapes and a deep and vibrant Indigenous culture rooted in centuries of tradition and knowledge. These communities embody a strong sense of connection, resilience, and collaboration, fostering an environment where cultural heritage and community spirit thrive.

Multifaceted Learning

The education model integrates the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual self through input from students, parents, communities, education authorities and Matawa Leadership. This multifaceted learning environment strives to meet the needs of every student by taking a holistic approach to education, incorporating mental health services, recreation opportunities, trades programming, outdoor education, distance education, cooperative education, land-based learning, and cultural and spiritual programming.

Student Support Services

Matawa Education's Pathways to Achieve Student Success (PASS) program offers inclusive support to Matawa First Nations schools. This includes assistance with literacy, numeracy, mental health, cultural education, nutrition, parent and student engagement, IT, and school success planning. PASS is funded by Indigenous Services Canada and provides on-the-ground support and technical assistance to schools. Regular feedback and evaluation ensure the program's effectiveness and alignment with the needs of Matawa students and communities.
