Join us this summer for an exciting opportunity to participate in school board planning. The successful candidate will assist with a full range of planning functions, providing support to the Property and Planning Team of the Durham District School Board (DDSB).
Working with general guidance from the Property and Planning Team, your role is to assist with researching and preparing reports, and providing general operational and technical support to the department.
Key responsibilities include: - Land Use Planning: Assist with the land-use planning process related to DDSB facilities, including municipal planning and school boundary development.
- Technical Mapping: Support the development of shapefiles identifying future school sites and verify locations through site visits.
- Facility Utilization: Support the review of elementary school floor plans to identify classroom and portable requirements, ensuring compliance with DDSB policies, Ministry requirements, and legislative regulations.
- Resource Management: Assist in managing the inventory of classrooms and portables used across various DDSB departments.
- Compliance Review: Provide support in determining sufficient parking and availability for additional classrooms/portables while ensuring compliance with legislative requirements.
Education & Qualifications - Enrollment: Must be a Post-secondary or Graduate student in planning, geography, environmental studies, architecture, landscape architecture, or a related field.
- Return to Studies: Must be enrolled in studies for the following school year.
- Technical Skills: Experience with GIS Applications is required.
- Software: Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Excel, is required.
- Professional Assets: Student membership in OPPI/CIP or CACPT is considered an asset. Knowledge of School Planning Software (SPS) or ESRI (ArcGIS) is also an asset.
- Relevant Experience: Previous experience in school board or municipal planning, or knowledge of Provincial municipal planning/education legislation, is preferred.
- Core Competencies: Strong written and oral communication skills, sound judgement, analytical problem-solving, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
Position Details - Salary: $23.00 per hour.
- Term: May 2026 to August 21, 2026.
- Schedule (May - June): 7-hour days, Monday to Friday.
- Schedule (July - August): 8-hour days, Monday to Thursday.
