Indigenous Education Summer Language Program

The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.

This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) presents a Summer Language Program tailored for self-identified Indigenous students, featuring outdoor experiential learning intertwined with language instruction. This program is credit-based and will run pending student registrations. Open to students in Grades 9 to 12 as of September 2025, participants will delve into a curriculum infused with Indigenous content and pedagogy, fostering a holistic learning experience.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create and deliver a curriculum connected to LNO AO - Ojibwe Language course.

• Assess, evaluate and report gains from beginning to the conclusion course.

• Take daily attendance and maintain attendance records.

• Ensure regular communication and engagement strategies with parents/guardians.

• Actively plan and collaborate with program teachers and community partners on the experiential learning portion of the.

Skills:

Strong background and expertise in:

• Anishinaabemowin Language curriculum and programming strategies to ensure student success

• Differentiated Instruction

• responsive outdoor learning opportunities - connected to Anishinaabemowin Language curriculum

• Inquiry-based and experiential learning

• Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogy and resources available to support programming

• Parent/guardian engagement experience

• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills

• Experience working collaboratively with knowledge keepers and elders

• Skills in consultative and positive collaborative processes and relationship building skills

• Experience working with Indigenous Youth

Qualifications:

• Ontario College of Teacher's Certificate of Qualification.

• Advanced beginner or intermediate level of speaking in Anishinaabemowin. (at a minimum) with previous experience teaching Anishinaabemowin.

• Lived experience with Anishinaabe language, community, culture and traditions.

• Indigenous ancestry lived experiences and community connections are an asset.

Program Dates:

• June 29 - July 24, 2026 (no class on July 1, 2026)

• (Monday to Thursday - in-person and Fridays - asynchronous)

• Hours: 9:00 - 3:00 p.m.

• Maximum of 120 hours

Additional Information:

• Position will be at Nonquon OEE site with an asynchronous component (on-line)

• Grades 9-12 (pending student registration)

• Provide a current criminal background check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
