The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.
This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.
The DDSB is offering a Summer Learning Program consisting of Outdoor Experiential learning opportunities for self-Identified Indigenous students. Students will be engaged in inquiry land-based learning that incorporates and supports cultural understanding and learning through the integration of Indigenous content and pedagogy.
Key Responsibilities:- Participate in training and planning activities before program begins and submit curriculum to support individual student needs (June 30 - July 3rd - no work on July 1)
- Experience working collaboratively with knowledge keepers and elders
- Ensure regular communication and engagement strategies with parents/guardians
- Actively plan and collaborate with program teachers and community partners in the land-based program design and implementation
Skills:Strong background and expertise in:
- Land-based learning experience
- Responsive outdoor learning opportunities
- Experiential learning experience
- Knowledge of Indigenous pedagogy and resources available to support programming
- Parent/guardian engagement experience
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Skills in consultative and collaborative processes and relationship building skills with Indigenous community partners
- Experience working with Indigenous Youth
- Experience with Nonquon Outdoor Ed facility equipment and trails
Qualifications:- Ontario College of Teacher's Certificate of Qualification.
- Experience with land-based learning programming.
- Indigenous ancestry lived experiences and community connections are an asset.
Program Dates: • Monday to Thursday - June 29 - July 23, 2026 (no class on July 1, 2026)
• Hours: 9:00 - 3:00 p.m.
• Maximum of 100 hours
Additional Information:• Position will be at Nonquon OEE site
• Grades 2-8
• Provide a current criminal background check with vulnerable sector screening upon hire.
