Library Assistant
Sacred Heart School
Hours of work: 12 hours/week
Wage: $ 30.76 per hour, as per Schedule "A" of CUPE collective agreement (September 1, 2025).
Classification: Part-time
Effective/Term: August 31, 2026
Basic Qualifications: This position requires a Grade 12 education, with the completion of the
Library Assistant or equivalent course. One to two years of previous on the job or related
experience is required.

LIBRARY ASSISTANT Title: Library Assistant Reports to: Principal

Position Identification: School Support
Position Summary:
The Library Assistant is responsible for the day to day operation of the school library including planning, organizing and maintaining services and equipment. The Library Assistant helps staff and students to
access materials and/or equipment. The Library Assistant plans and organizes special events and displays.
Position Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the principal, the Library Assistant interacts with staff, students, volunteers
and outside agencies to provide and obtain information. The incumbent must be able to work with minimal supervision. Excellent organizational, planning and multi-tasking skills are essential. Good
communication skills are required. The incumbent must have good computer skills and a solid understanding of software, word processing and other computer applications used by the school.
Position Duties:
• Order all print and non-print materials.
• Receive all incoming materials and check for damage or back orders.
• Catalogue materials according to Dewy Decimal system and input into software program.
• Bar code new material, stamp books/materials, add spine labels and cards and laminate as
necessary.
• Maintain a record of all incoming materials.
• Keep track of audio/visual material and clean when necessary.
• Assign bar codes to students/
• Organize, maintain and record the use of materials and equipment.
• Remove old materials that have been replaced by new material and update the software program.

• Conduct an annual inventory check.
• Repair damaged materials.
• Assist the principal in the preparation of annual estimates for the library.
• Assist the principal in monitoring the library budget, setting budget priorities and keeping detailed records of budget expenditures throughout the year.
• Complete all purchase orders as required.
• Coordinate purchasing for special projects and curriculum needs and receive, process and distribute the material.
• Provide assistance to staff members in the selection of materials, public presentations/displays and special projects that may arise periodically.
• Provide information to staff and students on the use of the library, including finding materials,
library rules, using computer programs and other information as requested.
• Prepare a schedule and revise it when necessary for classes to attend the library.
• Read to students during class visits.
• Set up displays to enhance reading themes (i.e. holidays, special events, new materials).
• Organize book fairs, advertise the fair, find a supplier(s), organize book distribution set up, handle
cash, sell unsold books back to the supplier, calculate and record the profit, prepare appropriate paperwork and clean up after the book fair.
• Prepare appropriate public relations displays for parent/teacher interview times, open houses, general parental visits and other public events.
• Run overdue and fine lists and provide it to the principal.
• Keep library organized, neat and tidy.
• All other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
The incumbent is exposed to interruptions and lack of privacy and has short periods of heavy lifting, moving materials, crouching and kneeling to put materials away.
Qualifications: This position requires a Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with the completion of the Library Assistant Technician course or equivalent. One (1) to two (2) years of previous on the job or related
experience is required.
