Fort Albany First Nation is Cree Nation community along the west coast of James Bay. With a population of approximately 1,200 people within the community itself, Fort Albany First Nation serves around 5,000 band members that it shares with Kashechewan First Nation.

License/Certification:

• Only applicants with (OCT) Ontario College of Teachers certification are accepted. IF you do not hold OCT please do not apply.

• As our ideal candidate for this role, you will have knowledge of culturally responsive teaching practices and be able to integrate First Nations cultural knowledge, land-based learning, and traditional physical activities/games into the Physical Education curriculum. In addition, you will have excellent computer literacy skills, along with the ability to work both independently and in a team environment. Experience as an Elementary Physical Education Teacher or leading school sports and wellness programs is a strong asset.

  You will need to be a member of the Ontario College of Teachers in good standing, demonstrate a strong professional work ethic, and possess excellent interpersonal skills and classroom/gymnasium management abilities. Knowledge of First Nations culture and experience working with First Nations students is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Preparing, teaching, and assessing Elementary Physical Education & Health concepts, on par with the Ontario curriculum 
• Promoting physical literacy, healthy active living, teamwork, and sportsmanship among elementary students.
• Incorporating First Nation cultural knowledge and traditional games and outdoor/land-based movement into the curriculum in collaboration with the Language and Cultural coordinator 
• Maintaining gym equipment, safety standards and structured behaviour management strategies during physical activities.
• Participating in ongoing Professional Development 
• Providing necessary information to the Principal for student progress reports 
• Coordinating meetings with parents and other professionals when necessary 
• Keeping appropriate records and informing administration and staff of relevant student or family contacts. 
• You will need an Ontario Teaching Certificate
• Knowledge of First Nations culture and experience with First Nations students is an asset, along with possessing excellent interpersonal skills and classroom management skills.

• Required to follow Board policies and stay abreast of updates and changes.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
